About the Furniture and Major Artifacts in the King Room
The desk and chair in the center of the room were used by Gov. King during his days in the House of Representatives. They were donated by the New Mexico General Services Department. The items on the desk were originally displayed in the Round House and were donated by the Kings. The gavel and sound block in the glass display cabinet were used by Gov. King and were donated by the Legislative Council Service.
The credenza just inside the door was built by Oscar de la Harp and was used by Gov. King while he was Governor of the State. It was donated by the New Mexico General Services Department. Please encourage your guests to sign the Guest Book on the credenza if you hold an event in the King Room. The photo album on the credenza documents the construction of the Reading Room and the April 6, 2006 dedication ceremony which was attended by 400 guests.
The storage and display cabinets were handcrafted by Sunray Construction in Albuquerque. The +K carving represents the King Brothers Ranch brand.
The conference table was donated by the Law School. It seats 20 and was built by Southwest Spanish Craftsmen in Santa Fe. It previously served as the Dean’s conference table.
The chairs, sofa, end tables and lamps were custom ordered by the Room from Cabot Wren and Ernest Thompson. The chandelier and sconces are from Strictly Southwestern in Albuquerque.
The drum by the sofa was built for the Reading Room by Cochiti Pueblo artisans from a tree specially chosen for this purpose. It replicates a drum that the Kings recalled from their years spent in the Governor’s Mansion.
The Official State Seal on the wall was hand carved from a single piece of a tree trunk recovered from a tree damaged by a forest fire. It was provided by New Mexico Correctional Industries.

The Pueblo pottery and Eagle Dancer are on loan from the personal art collection of Gov. and Mrs. King.
