NM Collaborative Law Library Outreach Program
The UNM Law Library serves all New Mexico citizens as the only large academic legal research facility in the state. The Library’s patron base includes practitioners, academic researchers, local tribal communities, and the public at large, as well as UNM Law faculty and students. During the academic year, the Law Library accommodates over 10,000 visitors per month. This number translates into almost 6,000 reference questions per year handled by the Law librarians. An average of 45% (2,700) of the questions come from members of the general public using the Library’s resources to do legal research.
To accommodate communities outside of the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas, law librarians from UNM and the New Mexico Supreme Court Library visit public and academic libraries around the state, providing presentations and workshops for librarians, attorneys, and citizens. As part of its outreach program, the UNM Law Library also licenses legal research databases for public use in the four UNM branch libraries located at the Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos, and Valencia campuses. These efforts allow maximization of State funding by making the UNM Law Library’s resources available to as much of New Mexico’s population as possible.
For more information about hosting an outreach session in your community, please contact Eileen Cohen, Law Librarian, at (505) 277-8654 or cohen@law.unm.edu.
