Furniture & Artifacts - Acknowledgements
The King Reading Room was constructed in the UNM Law Library with funds raised through private donations and a special state appropriation. Gov. King dedicated the Reading Room on April 6, 2006, on the occasion of his 82nd birthday. The Reading Room houses and displays memorabilia from the King Collection, including furniture, photographs, mementos, campaign literature, and art objects collected by Gov. and Mrs. King during their decades of public service to the state of New Mexico. The vision for the King Reading Room includes using it to provide both public display space for photographs and memorabilia as well as meeting space for special events.
The Reading Room offers walls of lighted display cabinets and storage cabinets, a serving area, a conference table and seating, an intimate seating area for smaller meetings, built-in computer and audio-visual projection equipment, and wireless Internet broadcasting. The Reading Room is decorated in a Western motif and boasts 12-ft. ceilings covered with massive wooden beams in a wagon-wheel pattern highlighted by a rustic chandelier.
The Reading Room displays numerous photographs of Gov. King taken during his years of service in the House and theExecutive Office, as well as a handcarved Seal of the State of New Mexico. Additional installations of memorabilia and artifacts from the King years are planned for the future.
Although archives generally have very restrictive policies concerning reading room use, the UNM Law Library prefers to make the King Reading Room available for special events and meetings so that it can be enjoyed by as many as possible. Consequently, it was designed to provide meeting space for 20 and lecture space for 40, with the addition of extra seating. The King Reading Room is equipped with a speaker’s podium, projector, screen, radio, DVD/VHS player, both wired and wireless internet connections, and wireless keyboard and mouse. Refreshments are permitted in the King Reading Room, subject to certain restrictions to protect the memorabilia housed there. Use of the King Reading Room for meetings and events after regular business hours is subject to the availability of Law Library staff to provide access. Meetings and events are scheduled by the Law Library Administrative staff at (505) 277-0089.
