Borrowing & Renewals

Community Borrower Cards are available to individuals who are not affiliated with the University or the State Bar of New Mexico.  These cards, good for one year, may be purchased for $35 at the Circulation Desk of the Law Library or at any of the UNM University Libraries branch locations. Cardholders may borrow material from the Law Library or the UNM University Libraries, but not the Health Sciences Library. Cardholder privileges do not include interlibrary loan borrowing or remote (off-campus) access to the library's electronic resources. Loan periods for community borrowers are 42 days, with two renewals.


UNM students, faculty, and staff (not affiliated with School of Law) may check out circulating materials with a valid UNM ID. Guests from main campus and the medical school must first register at their "home" library before the system allows them check-out privileges at the Law Library. Loan periods extend until the end of the semester in which the item is checked out, with two renewals.


Members of the New Mexico Bar or a Tribal Bar may register for borrowing privileges with a valid New Mexico or tribal bar card. NM and tribal bar members are allowed to borrow circulating materials from the Law Library at no charge. Loan periods are 42 days, with two renewals. To borrow materials from other University libraries, a Community Borrower Card may be purchased from the Circulation Desk of the Law Library or any of the UNM University Libraries branch locations for $35.


Court Personnel and Tribal Court Personnel may register for borrowing privileges with a business card from the courts. Court personnel and tribal court personnel may check out any item held by the Law Library at no charge. Loan periods are six months, with two renewals. To borrow materials from other University libraries, a Community Borrower Card may be purchased from the Circulation Desk of the Law Library or any of the UNM University Libraries branch locations for $35.


Employees of New Mexico state offices and agencies may register for borrowing privileges with a business card from the agency. State office and agency employees are allowed to borrow circulating material from the Law Library at no charge. Loan periods are 42 days, with two renewals. To borrow materials from other University libraries, a Community Borrower Card may be purchased from the Circulation Desk of the Law Library or any of the UNM University Libraries branch locations for $35.


Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) and New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries (NMCAL) faculty, staff, and students may register for Community Borrower privileges, free of charge. Borrowers from CNM and NMCAL need to present a current photo ID from their school to verify their status is “in good standing” in order to obtain Community Borrower privileges. They will be issued a card with a barcode attached. This card enables the holder to borrow circulating materials from all UNM libraries. Loan periods are 42 days, with two renewals allowed.

 
Ordering Books From Other Libraries (Interlibrary Loan)

Members of the public who are not attorneys or affiliated with UNM may obtain this service through their local public library.

UNM faculty, staff, and students who are not affiliated with the School of Law may obtain this service through the UNM University Libraries.

This service is free for New Mexico Bar members but borrowers are responsible for any fees assessed by the lending library.
