Reference Policy

Our Reference librarians are experts in legal research methodology and are available to answer questions from New Mexico residents about how to do legal research; however, the librarians cannot do research for others, nor may they answer questions about the law or provide legal advice. If you need to find out what the law is, we encourage you to come into the Law Library where you will have access to the books and computers to conduct your own research. When you come in, we will show you where to find the materials you need and how to use them.

Our Patrons

The UNM Law Library is the largest academic legal research library in New Mexico. The Library offers services and access to all New Mexicans—Law School students and faculty, the legal community, and the general public. We typically receive 20% of our reference questions from practitioners and alumni, and another 45% from the general public who come to the Library to do legal research.

Reference Assistance

The Reference Desk is located at the entrance to the Library. During the academic year, reference assistance is available:

Monday-Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Saturday: No Reference
Sunday: 12 noon to 4:00

Reference hours are more limited when school is not in session. Please call the Reference Desk at (505) 277-0935, or email us at:  libref@law.unm.edu, if you have any questions.

Tours

Librarians are available to give group tours if requested in advance and if there is a librarian available. We also ask that you alert us in advance if you plan to hold a teaching session in the Library or bring in a large group. Many types of patrons use the Library simultaneously; this requires coordination to ensure that the needs of each group are met in the best possible way, and in keeping with the Library's mission of service to its faculty, students, and others. To arrange for a tour or to notify the Library in advance about a group of visitors, contact Eileen Cohen, 277-8654.
